Join us in celebrating Raider Nation and the legacy of Northbrook High School!
At Northbrook High School, we are always proud of our graduates. They represent a vital part of our legacy, bringing their distinct Northbrook experiences and wisdom into their chosen fields. In our ongoing celebration of Raider Nation, we turn the spotlight to Kimberly Villalta, Class of 2023.
In her days at Northbrook, Villalta displayed remarkable determination, coupled with an undying enthusiasm for learning. She navigated a series of new situations including a new principal, a new administration and COVID - learning to adapt and persevere with a determined mindset.
Today, Villalta is thriving as a student at Barnard, exploring potential careers in law and searching for new internship opportunities. Despite the distance and new environment, her connection to Northbrook remains strong.
From the challenging yet enjoyable Calculus AB course taught by Coach Claydon, to attending schools such as Lion Lane, Housman Elementary, and KIPP Courage before eventually arriving at Northbrook High School, this connection was strengthened by the enduring friendships she has formed.
“The friends I made in Spring Branch are like my family. We've been through it all together. So, my link to Spring Branch isn't just educational – it's personal, it's emotional, and it's something that's stuck with me long after I left Northbrook behind,” said Villalta.
During her high school journey, Villalta found an invaluable resource in the school’s student supports and college prep programming, both enabled her to blossom as a young woman. Coupled with amazing counselors, Villalta benefited from help with mental health checks, tax filing, finding scholarships and more.
“Northbrook taught me to go beyond what is expected of me. This was encouraged through my teachers and counselors,” said Villalta.
From college applications to internships, the school’s college prep programming gave Villalta a unique chance to set her sights on post-secondary study beyond Texas, ultimately landing her a spot at Barnard College at Columbia University.
Remembering her senior year at Northbrook, Villalta reflects the strong sense of connectedness amongst students that she felt navigating an unpredictable road to graduation. This sense of unity defined her Northbrook experience, making it truly unforgettable.
Throughout her journey, Villalta paid homage to the spirit of Northbrook: defying statistics and challenging stereotypes. Her story echoes the drive and ambition found in each Raider, recognizing that success isn't always linear or defined by traditional pathways.
“Challenges provide an opportunity for finding shared understanding, as we all yearn to have our voices heard,” said Villalta.
Her story also shines a light on the strong culture of student support at Northbrook. From her counselor, Ms. Basquine, to Mr. James Hughes, her mentor, caring adults made all the difference. Through their guidance, she managed her stress, stayed on top of academics, secured valuable scholarships and more.
Northbrook High School provided Villalta with an education that equipped her with essential life skills, ultimately leading to her independence and growth as an individual.
We are immensely proud of Villalta and excited to see what the future holds for her. As we continue our Celebrating Raider Nation series, we hope to inspire our current students with stories like hers - filled with perseverance, resilience and achievement, woven into the fabric of our Raider community.
