Raider Cross Country races back to regionals

Celebrating the Season: As the 2025 cross country season comes to a close, we’re taking a moment to look back and celebrate the incredible dedication, teamwork, and school spirit shown by our SBISD athletes. From early-morning runs to championship finishes, these teams exemplified what it means to compete with heart and represent their schools with pride.

For Head Boys Cross Country Coach Abel Salazar, the 2025 season at Northbrook High School (NHS) is about discipline, leadership, and chasing big goals.

“The kids who run cross country are some of the most disciplined and mentally strong athletes on campus,” Salazar said. “Not a lot of students choose to wake up for a 6:00 a.m. workout every day much less during their summer break. That commitment says a lot about who they are.”

Building leadership and chemistry

This year’s Raider squad isn’t just focused on running faster—it’s about growing as a team.

“The guys have really matured as leaders,” Salazar explained. “They push each other, motivate each other, and hold each other accountable. Of course, we’re improving our times, but I’m just as proud of how they’re improving as teammates.”

With a healthy mix of veterans and rising talent, the team has developed a strong sense of unity. Friendly competition keeps practices sharp, while a culture of accountability helps every runner rise to the challenge.

Goals for the season

For the first time in several years, the Raiders bring back a core group of multi-year runners.

“This is the first year where a bulk of our team has at least two years under their belt,” Salazar said. “We’re not being shy about our goals—we want to qualify for regionals, which hasn’t happened here in a long time. And why not set our sights on state?”

Salazar noted that consistency, trust in training, and patience will be key: “It’s not about overnight gains. Cross country is a marathon, not a sprint.”

Runners to watch

Northbrook returns several athletes ready to make a major impact:

  • Chris Argueta, Sr. – A four-year runner whose leadership and experience will guide the younger athletes.
  • John Guerra, Jr. – After a strong freshman campaign and a steady sophomore year, Guerra is primed for a breakout season.
  • Bodhi Dugas, So. – A sophomore who had a standout freshman year and is expected to take another big step forward.

Leadership and captains

While Salazar sees leadership across the roster, one athlete has become a glue guy for the team: Tony Sanchez.

“Tony has been huge for us,” Salazar said. “He holds the guys accountable, makes sure they’re up and at practice, and even organizes runs outside of school. But honestly, any of these athletes could step into a captain’s role—the chemistry is that strong.”

Looking ahead

With discipline, returning experience, and a hunger to make program history, the Raiders are setting their sights high.

“These guys are ready to put in the work and push for something special,” Salazar said. “They know the road won’t be easy, but they’re embracing the grind. I believe this team can make a name for Northbrook cross country again.”
