Radier Nation: Kayla Delgado, Class of 2021

Join us in celebrating Raider Nation and the legacy of Northbrook High School!

Kayla Delgado, Class of 2021, recently shared her experiences as a Raider and how it helped her prepare for where she is today.

Before attending Northbrook High School, Delgado attended Edgewood Elementary and Spring Woods Middle School. Being part of the Spring Branch community left a significant impact on Delgado's life. “I met some of the best people there, including friends and teachers,” said Delgado. “When I think of Spring Branch I think of all those memories.”

Delgado graduated with the motto One last ride. It reflects the roller-coaster ride of her high school experience, starting with Hurricane Harvey in freshman year, followed by the freeze in sophomore year, and ending with Covid in junior and senior year. Even in the midst of these challenges, Delgado’s high school experience is one she cherishes.

What made Northbrook special for her were the teachers and school community.

“The teachers at Northbrook went above and beyond their duties and genuinely cared about us,” said Delgado. “They took notice when something was off and would ask if we were ok. This kind of attention made me feel seen and heard.”

Delgado's definition of success is progress rather than winning. She credits this to the teachers who saw her as something bigger than what she saw herself as at the time. “Teachers like Ms. Nuhu, Ms. Garza, Coach B. and Mr. Raska were instrumental in helping me get through high school,” said Delgado.

Delgado recalls Chemistry class with Mrs. Cruz as her favorite. “Mrs. Cruz's teaching style made learning fun and engaging. Her experiments were the most exciting part.” Her favorite teacher? Ms. Nuhu and Ms. Garza. “Both always went above and beyond to help me out, especially when I was struggling,” said Delgado.

Delgado also credits the discipline she developed at Northbrook for helping prepare her for a college career at Stephen F. Austin State University.

“For me I feel like being a part of the athletics program helped me with where I am today. Discipline was a big part of that, all the coaches I had were very good at not making things just about the game but about real life and how we to approach our goals and success,” said Delgado.

Sports also served to connect Delgado to the school’s culture. “Playing sports made me feel connected because you play for your enjoyment, but you're also playing for the school. When I think back to high school a lot of the memories come from being on the court,” said Delgado.

Delgado 's time at Northbrook was one that she cherishes. It taught her valuable life lessons and prepared her for college. It also inspired her to embrace her full potential and challenge herself. “Northbrook High School will always hold a special place in my heart,” said Delgado.
