At Northbrook High School (NHS), senior Sonny Mai is getting a head start on his future thanks to the RISE program and SBISD’s partnership with Houston City College (HCC).
Through RISE, Sonny is earning college credit while still in high school. He’s also gained access to HCC resources like clubs, counseling, and student events. This opportunity doesn’t just save money, it positions him to graduate ahead of his peers and step confidently into his next chapter.
“What I love most about math and physics is how they make me think critically,” Sonny said. “There’s only one solution, but so many different ways to get there. Finding my own pathway builds my problem-solving skills.”
That mindset has already paid off. Sonny recently landed a competitive Data Analyst internship, standing out as the only high school student selected from 250 applicants. He credits the RISE program for giving him the academic rigor, confidence, and preparation to compete with older students.
Sonny embodies the Core Characteristics of a T-2-4 Graduate. He’s also living proof of SBISD’s T-2-4 vision where every student leaves prepared for military service, technical training, a two-year degree, or a four-year degree.
“My advice to younger students,” he said, “is to always weigh the pros and cons. Think about the impact, measure the cost, and decide what’s really worth it. That’s how you grow.”
With his eyes set on studying finance and investment banking, Sonny is showing how strong partnerships between high schools and higher education create powerful opportunities for students to graduate ready for what’s next.
